I received my first Old Faithful pre-assembled IWB about a month ago and was very interested in evaluating this product. As a certified firearms instructor I train hundreds of students each year in discreet, legal concealed carry here in Oregon, and always discuss various methods of carry with my clients.

I was impressed with the quality of construction – the leather is thick, with a generous surface to protect the wearer from the pistol surfaces. The outer Kydex shell is the thickest I have seen used in IWB construction – a real benefit in my experience, as I have seen holsters with less material crack and break under regular use.

The hardware used to attach the Kydex outer shell to the leather backing is of superior quality, and adjustable for tension (as opposed to some other manufacturers’ practice of using rivets); your design, coupled with the additional holes in the leather base, permits the user to tailor the carry angle and height.

The holster I received had belt clips made of metal, again attached with adjustable, field-replaceable hardware instead of plastic clips with rivets. The result is regardless of holster position or angle, these durable clips can fully engage the belt/pants at the proper angle.

The real test was daily wear – after a short break-in period (as new leather on any holster is a bit stiff), I discovered I could wear this holster all day… and I have long days. This type of holster, coupled with your refinements in materials and hardware, is the most comfortable IWB I’ve worn in the thirty-plus years of concealed carry, competition and instructor duty. I was particularly impressed with the comfort when spending long hours in a vehicle, finding it unnecessary to unholster the pistol as I have in the past with other designs.

One-handed holstering is easy as it does not collapse due to its design; this increases safety, as many users with leather or nylon IWB units use their weak hand to reopen the mouth of those holsters…a hazardous move as it places the fingers of one hand near the muzzle.

Your pre-assembled IWB product, coupled with your 50-year warranty, makes this a solid choice for anyone who carries in this manner. I will be ordering additional holsters for myself and my other instructors, and showing this in class to our students that elect to carry IWB as an example of a quality product.

As a licensed CCW permit holder from the Show-Me State, I have carried a fairly broad variety handguns concealed.

From a practical standpoint, the Old Faithful holster is pretty similar to a few other big name-brand tuckable IWB holsters. It is a molded, fitted kydex shell mounted to a thick side of leather, with belt clips mounted on both sides to hold the rig in place. But that’s where the similarities end, and as we all know, the Devil is in the details.

Let me show you what sets Old Faithful apart from the competition.

For instance, let’s compare the Old Faithful rig for my Ruger P89 to that offered by Crossbreed. The Crossbreed is an excellent rig, but it falls short of the Old Faithful in several key ways. Before we even get started, I have to point out that Crossbreed DOES NOT offer a holster for my beloved Ruger P89 without a custom order – strike one right off from the start. In fact, Crossbreed’s selection is pretty limiting — hope you run a common handgun! But let’s move on to technical differences.

First of all, note that the O.F. rig covers more of the handgun than the Crossbreed. This may or may not matter to you, but I like to have my front sight completely covered to help protect it from the hard objects into which I could accidentally bump the gun against.

Second, since we’re speaking about the Kydex, notice how much thicker it is on the Old Faithful rig? Old Faithful uses 0.093 outer kydex, Crossbreed uses 0.06 kydex; in short, the kydex used by Old Faithful is more than one-third thicker, making it much sturdier, easier to re-holster your sidearm, and providing more protection to it. Thinner kydex is an inferior material that is easier to work with, but nowhere near as tough. As a boon, Old Faithful offers much more color selection as well – note my beautiful desert digital pattern!

Third, the Old Faithful provides for FOUR points of adjustable retention, and provides everything you need (including spare screws, rubber shims, a hex wrench and great instructions) to accomplish this task as ordered. If you happen to break or lose a screw, they will make it right – no questions asked. The Crossbreed… no points of adjustable retention – so if you want to make it tighter… I hope you like the way it comes from the factory, because you’re basically stuck with it that way. You can loosen the Crossbreed, but you cannot tighten it beyond the point at which it was originally molded. However, if you want your Old Faithful tighter or looser, just bust out that provided hex wrench and get to work.

I’d like to issue a quick correction: Crossbreed and Galco also use steel clips, though with Crossbreed, this is not how their holsters came originally. They now use what they call the “SteelClip,” and advertise it as coming with all of their IWB holsters.

As you can see, the Old Faithful stands above the competition in a few key ways, potentially making it a much better choice for you. That’s not to say that the Galco or Crossbreed is a bad choice – they are the gauge by which all other tuckable IWB holsters are measured – but that they’re potentially not the best and certainly not the only choice.

Personal Impressions

Seriously. This isn’t sales hype; I’m not making any return from Old Faithful from what I’m writing here, nor am I obligated to give a glowing review on any donated item. These were, and without exaggeration, the first words out of my mouth to my awesome girlfriend Maricely, regarding my Old Faithful Holster. After saying them, I wiggled around like a worm, bent over, hopped a few times, did squat-thrusts and then followed the statement with, “I LOVE this holster! We need to get one for you too!” And it’s absolutely true after weeks of daily wear and testing – in fact, as it has begun to break-in, it has grown even more comfortable.

The weight of the big Ruger P89 – almost three pounds fully loaded with my preferred carry load – seems to immediately melt away when the handgun is holstered. The handgun does not catch or snag on my clothing, and can be comfortable worn from about the 2:30 – 5:00 position on your body (I prefer about 3:30) if your belt buckle was 12:00 Noon on a clock face.

It makes carrying my Ruger more comfortable than carrying my Makarov PM, and the former is no less than twice the handgun. It is superior to any of its better known competition, and is offered for more handguns and can be purchased for less (especially if you buy the kit.) Everyone I have spoken with at Old Faithful Holster has been exceptional in their level of service and attention to detail, and I will certainly do business with them again in the future. In fact, if I ever purchase another holster of this type, it will be from Old Faithful. This is my favorite holster, bar none.

This is an UNSOLICITED TESTIMONY-

I cannot even begin to describe how happy I am with your product!

I think it has been approx 1 month since I received your holster and it’s broken in and so comfortable! This is by far to date the most comfortable holster that I have EVER owned (I have a shoe-box now in my closet with 7 holsters that are no longer used.)

I can also attest that since using your product my “attire” although unchanged has even my close friends asking if I have lost weight! Having the ability to tuck in and not having to wear oversized shirts left untucked is great for the golf-course….NOT for the board room!

I just wanted to provide some feedback on the assembly of the stage 3 IWB kit I received from you today.

In a word….Simple.

There is no way I could justify the purchase of a completed holster as long as this kit is available. The savings is incredible and the quality is the same since I’m using the same components you do. It took me 5 minutes to seperate the parts. 3 minutes to review the very intuitive assembly instructions video provide on your site and 10 minutes to assemble a gorgeous holster.

I can’t believe how thick the Kydex is! The piece of leather is pretty sweet too. Very thick and tough yet soft and smooth to the touch Adjusting retention tension is a terrific idea and very easy to accomplish.

I know there are a ton of IWB hybrid choices out there now. They all offer their little nuances but your offering has differences that are more than subtle. Including the ability to save money, not by buying cheaper models of lesser materials, but by offering the buyer the ability to build it him/her self and being able to choose from varying degrees of completeness.

In my opinion none of the others can compete. I would highly recommend Old Faithful to anyone interested in IWB hybrids or actually any type of concealed carry holster.

You’re a problem solver! Just wanted to tell you how satisfied I am with my new holster. I have a shelf full of IWB holsters and none of them have the comfort level of this one.

 

I had it on yesterday for 14 hours and almost forgot it was there. It TOTALLY conceals the thicker Glock 29/30 frame the best and this is at the 3:00 position in a tee shirt. I wasn’t self-conscious yesterday during a grocery store trip like I usually am checking myself to see if it’s printing.

 

I can bend over without having the grip/butt sticking out because it seems to wrap tightly to the body. I used to unholster in the car because it was too uncomfortable driving. Not anymore. When I took it out of the package my wife says, “that looks bulky, you’re gonna wear that!” And when I first looked at “hybrid-type” holsters I thought the same thing. I was totally wrong. This thing distributes and balances the weight evenly.

Just got the holster and I love the metal belt clips thanks. I will be telling everyone I know and it still conceals great even with a evil 15 round standard size magazine and grip extension for compacts
